Scots and Scots-Irish Heritage Day in Tennessee

On Saturday 28 June 2008, the Scottish Society of Middle Tennessee celebrated Scots and Scots-Irish Heritage Day in Tennessee by hosting our final event of the 2007-08 Season ~ “
Story Time” at the Williamson County Library.

What a fantastic success! Over 50 people, children and adults, gathered to hear stories and bagpipes, watch Irish and Highland Dancers and taste a little Scottish fare.

Carol Montgomerie hosted the event, which was filmed by Williamson County’s Channel 3 for airing at a later date. Pam Perks read Wee Gillis which was acted out by a very brave Beg Bergman, Maddie Rogers showed us some Irish Step Dancing; Helena Montgomerie showed everyone the beginning steps to Highland Dancing; Katie Snyder did a beautiful rendition of the Sword Dance; Greg Cutcliff played the bagpipes wowing the crowd with Scotland the Brave and It’s a Small World After All and then really wowed the crowd by playing a special request of Rocky Top. Carol read The St. Patrick’s Day Shillelagh. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed tasting scones and scotch eggs while visiting. Many members of the SSMT were on hand to answer questions from the kids and their parents and some came just to see the program.

A
HUGE THANK YOU goes to Peggy Macpherson and the Children’s Department of the Williamson County Library.

Glengarry Highland Dancers

Every year, the
SSMT supports the Glengarry Highland Dancers with scholarship funds that help dancers attend summer camp in June and the United States Inter-Regional Championship (held this year in Denver) in July.

Dance camp this year was a fun and exciting time for all the dancers who came from all over the Southeast United States to fine tune their dancing skills with Ms. Diane Krewe (who later won one of three cruises as part of a raffle to raise funds for the USIR in 2009.

Six Glengarry Dancers attended the United States Inter-Regional Championship this year and all did well, several placing. Congratulations to all the dancers!!
